Week 4

At this point, we have been working on our phrases 1-5. We played with four words: nest, kite, boat, and bridge. After we chose two words we had to pick one to stand in and the second one was the influence it has on your body. I chose the word boat and the word kite. I was imagining my phrase in a submarine. Since it wasn’t specific what kind of boat it was and a kite that was trying to take flight but couldn’t because it was enclosed in this submarine. I tried not to overthink it too much even though I felt very uncomfortable. As I was moving through my phrases I discovered that I was literal in my approach. I made legs more of the anchor of the boat and my upper body the kite-like qualities. I realized with a kite, someone has to hold it in order for the kite to do what it is supposed to do. A kite cannot reach its full potential without someone anchoring it on the ground level.

I learned that abstract symbols can be universal or private. We were tasked to draw a tree, flower and the sun. We all had different interpretations and variations of those symbols. My tree was a christmas tree and I noticed me and Jordan drew a corner sun. We developed phrase 6 from each other's symbols. My words were angular and long. As I was workshopping, I didn't like to exert myself so I started on the floor. I know I have a tendency to be long winded but I kept this phrase short so if I were to go back and manipulate it I could. I am learning if it is not concise then it would be difficult to build on because there wouldn't be a clear theme.
