Artistic Statement

As an artist I value self confidence, authenticity, and freedom. My work physicalizes how I interpret and navigate my personal experiences through the lens of being a black, cisgender, liberal, spiritual woman in America. As I continue to become more aware of my own authenticity as an artist, I uncover survival patterns I subconsciously developed in order to overcome problematic body standards and social constructs set by the patriarchy. Utilizing a fusion of my classical ballet and African diaspora training as I create work that uncovers my deepest emotions. It craves vulnerability and openness from everyone involved in my choreographic process. I’m released from the weight of others’ expectations and at times it can feel therapeutic because I have the freedom to experience the happiness, contentment, and deep sense of self-worth that comes from being who I am always meant to be. I’m a multifaceted artist and on this continuous journey I aspire to empower black dancers, especially ones who feel ignored as they navigate societies striving to be their most authentic selves.
